To Bury His Son Alive for Mothe's(Mother's?) Sake
Kuo Ku of the Han dynasty was poor in his
family. He had a three-year-old boy. whom
Hu's mother used to feed with the little food
she spared.
Ku said to his wife "So destitute I an(am?) and
unable to support my mother. Now our son
comes to share her little food; why not bury it
alive for you may give birth to another baby,
but you cannot restore your mother to life again,
if she is starved to death?"
Hearing that, his wife dared not disobey the
idea of such burial, So Ku began to dig hole of
ever(over?) three feet deen(deep?); meanwhile all of a sudden
a caldron of gold appeared before his sight,
bearing the following inscription on it.
This is what Heaven bestows on Dutiful Son
Kuo Ku; neither officials can seize it, nor any
civilian can rob it.

為母埋児 母のために息子を生き埋めにすること
漢の時代の郭巨は家が貧しかった。彼には3歳の男の子がおり、郭巨の母はわずかな食料で孫を養っていた。
郭巨は妻に言った。「私は貧乏で、母を養うことができません。今、私たちの息子が母のわずかな食料を分けてもらいに来ました。なぜ生き埋めにしないのですか。あなたはまた赤ん坊を産むかもしれませんが、母が餓死してしまっては、再び命を取り戻すことはできません」と言った。
それを聞いた妻は、その埋葬の考えに逆らうことができず、郭巨は3フィート以上の深さの穴を掘り始めました。すると突然、彼の目の前に金の釜が現れ、そこには次のような文字が刻まれていました。
「これは天が郭巨に与えたもので、役人にも盗めず、民間人にも盗めません。」

原文の「黄金一釜」が英文では a caldron of goldと訳されています。これだと「黄金の（ひとつの）大釜」っていう意味ですよね？やはりこれは間違いやすいところのようですね。参考：書籍/廿四孝 渓斎英泉・4郭巨
「金の釜」と英訳されていますが、挿絵はまったく金の釜には見えません。そもそも何やら二つあるから「a」じゃないし。英訳した人は絵を見ないで訳しちゃったのかな？？？（これまでのところ、何か間違ってたら英語詳しい人教えてください）
