Wood Carved for Parent's Worship
Ting Lan of the Han dynasty lost his
parents, in his early youth. Impossible to serve
them both, he devised to carve a piece of wood
into his parents' image, which he should serve
as if the deceased were alive in order to fulfill
his long desire for constantly keeping in mind
their past favour.
After a long period of worship, his wife
turn(e)d out disrespectful to the tablet, and made
holes fust(just?) for fun on the hands of the image by
means of needle. With thus bleeding, when the
wooden image saw Lan its eyes were overflow(e)d
with tears. After Lan hed ledrned(learned?) all the truth
on enquiry, he got his wife divorced.

両親に仕えることができなかったので、彼は両親の遺影を彫り生前と同じように仕えることを思いつきました。
常に両親の恩を忘れないという長年の思いを叶えるためです。
長い間拝んでいたところ、妻がこの木像に愛想を尽かして、
面白半分で木像の手に針で穴を開けました。
この出血で、蘭を見た木像の目からは涙が溢れました。蘭は真実を知った後、妻を離婚させました。
