To Taste the Medicine in Person（親嘗湯薬）
Emperor Wen Ti named Heng of the Han
dynasty was the third son of Kao Tzu and
was begotten by his mother afterwards called
Empress Dowager Po seeondary(secondary?) wife to Kao
Tzu Prior to his accession to the throne, he was
appointed Prince Tai, and served his mother
without showing any negligence. In conrse(course?) of
her three years illness, his eyes were constantly
kept open, and he did not undress himself
while going to bed; while the medicine she took
was never presented unless he tasted it in
person beforehand. Hence his kindness and
filial piety became well known throughout the
empire

高祖の三男である。
母が産んだ子である。
薄太后は高祖の側室。
王位につく前は太子と呼ばれ、母に仕えた。
母に仕え、何一つ怠ることはなかった。母が3年前に病気で倒れ、その影響で
3年間の闘病生活の間、彼の目は常に見開かれていた。
寝ている間は服を脱がない。
また、服用する薬も、事前に自分で味見をしておかなければ、決して出さなかった。
そのため、彼の優しさと親孝行ぶりは、天下に知れ渡ることになった。
