Crying before bamboo and the Growing of Shoots
Meng Tsung of the Chin dynasty lost his
father in youth. His mother was advanced in
years and broken down in her health.
One winter day she wanted to have some soup
made of bamboo shoots. Meng Tsung was
greatly puzzled but went into the bamboo grove
where he wept bitterly.
As his filial piety moved Heaven and Earth,
all of a sudden the earth cracked. Several
bamboo shoots came forth from the ground. He
took them home to be made into soup, which
when eaten up, cured his mother's sickness.

晋王朝の孟宗は、若くして父を亡くしました。母親は老齢で健康を害していました。
ある冬の日、彼女はタケノコを使ったスープを食べたいと言いました。孟宗は大変困惑しましたが、竹林に入り、激しく泣きました。
彼の孝行が天と地を動かした時、突然、大地が割れたのです。地面から何本ものタケノコが出てきました。それを持ち帰ってスープにし、食べると母の病気が治りました。（翻訳サイト利用）
